Teaching Social Studies
My first position teaching was teaching 7th grade IB Individuals and Societies at Rippowam Middle School in Stamford, CT. I learned the benefits of teaching and consistently following procedures, the importance of a purposeful lesson, and the invaluable results of building genuine relationships.
Most importantly, I learned how to foster an equitable environment of acceptance and mutual respect between the teacher and students where students feel safe to grow from mistakes and support one another. This allowed me to maintain a safe environment in 5 classes of 25 heterogeneously grouped students with consistently reinforced procedures and expectations.
Due to the hard work of Rippowam's media center specialist, who obtained 1:1 Chromebooks for the school, I was able to utilize technology, such as Chromebooks, to teach and reinforce 21st century skills and new literacies within the content area of Social Studies. I differentiated lessons for students' readiness, interests, and learning profiles based on formative assessments to provide culturally responsive and effective instruction. I also had the opportunity to Collaborate with colleagues to implement the Instructional Data Team and Student Study Team processes for the first time.
